THE CONVICT’S GLOVES
Found at the estate sale of an elderly Russian couple, these gloves came to us already carrying a lifetime of wear. The leather is soft, broken in and shaped by someone else’s hands long before they reached ours.
We gave them a second knife with hand painted artwork inspired by the coded visual language of old Russian prison tattoos. Heavy Red lines symbolizing loyalty, punishment, survival and history that is rarely written down. The artwork was sealed with Angelus Finisher to protect the design while preserving the worn character of the leather.
The story is, these belonged to a former rail-yard worker who disappeared from his village after a winter arrest. Years later, the gloves returned without him, tucked inside a wooden drawer alongside a rusted key, two train tickets, and a photograph with faces barely recognizable to time. Whether they belonged to a thief, a prisoner, or simply a man with stories he never told is left to whoever wears the gloves next.
